Can the Impact of COVID-19 on Nursing Profession Be Positive?
The COVID-19 pandemic became a challenge to every person, especially nurses and doctors who were the first to help COVID-19 positive patients in nursing homes. Where there is a crisis, there is a place for innovations and new solutions. In this perception, COVID 19 impact on nursing practice in nursing homes was relatively positive. It was expressed in created fields for experiments for nurses in nursing homes and resulted in the upskilling and advanced use of technologies. Significant innovations were made, starting from safety equipment adjustment to the impact of virtual reality technologies.
When the nursing homes are full of COVID-19 positive patients, innovations more resemble improvisation, and trust has its impact here. The most significant impact of COVID-19 is telemedicine. It surely existed before the COVID-19 pandemic, but the wide spreading of such services is a COVID 19 impact on the healthcare system. In addition, care became more complex, including not only instant care in nursing homes but also mental health impact. During COVID-19, nurses managed to go beyond the scope and bring medical care from hospitals to communities and homes.

Relevant solutions and ideas for improved care that made an impact on nursing homes during the COVID-19 crisis were praised. For example, Malouf, a nurse from New Jersey, received a grant to realize her idea in COVID-19 times. She found a new way of placing supplies as regular pockets were unapproachable under an isolation gown. To encourage intense practical learning after the COVID-19 impact on nursing homes, different innovative challenges were created by American State medical authorities together with private pharma companies.
Expanded Practice: Impact of COVID 19 on Nursing Education in the US
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) in different states faced a number of restrictions in nursing homes. Challenging years of COVID-19 showed these barriers should be waived to provide sufficient patient access to care in nursing homes. However, current studies show APRNs continue to admit the existence of significant restrictions in nursing homes, even in full practice states. So what was the real COVID 19 impact on nursing profession that widely affected education and activities at nursing homes?
Before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were three types of authority for APRNs in nursing homes. Depending on the state, APRNs had full authority or reduced or restricted authority in caring homes. Full authority during COVID-19 includes four spheres of practice in a nursing home, while restricted comprises only two. Reduced and restricted practice states are characterized by the prohibition of practicing in homes independently, without supervision during COVID-19.
What restrictions on caring homes were waived? Withdrawal of restrictions would enable nurses to respond to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in nursing homes and to work to the full extent of education and training. Some states weren’t ready to change the restrictions, so the impact of COVID-19 on nursing profession differed from state to state. Main changes were made in regulation weakening, and states passed from more restricted types of authority in nursing homes to less regulated. However, during COVID-19, 7 states didn’t change anything in their policy regarding caring homes.
Although APRNs continued reporting barriers to practice in caring homes, we must assume it practically showed the impact of restrictions’ withdrawal during the healthcare crisis as COVID-19. The impact of removing barriers to APRNs is positive and has its advantages. The direct impact of COVID 19 on nursing education is the expanded possibility to gain more experience and, therefore, better qualifications.
Telehealth Use Showed COVID 19 Impact on Nursing Practice & Education
As the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak started, people were forced to self-isolate in their homes. They tended to use available remote services. Due to the impact of COVID-19 on the nursing profession, telemedicine grew popular, as it helped to receive medical aid remotely. The medical field was not ready for noticeable growth, so to make telemedicine available for everyone, the government had to carry out reforms for the COVID-19 period.
Advantages of telemedicine after COVID-19:
- Prevention of disease spreading by staying at people’s homes.
- Availability anytime from their homes.
- Preservation of personal protection equipment.
- Reaching patients disconnected from medical care.
- Sense of constant support and presence.
The considerable impact of COVID-19 on online education has also given new challenges to nursing homes. In-person learning was replaced by online learning at home, which deprived students of practical training. However, we assume this negative impact of COVID 19 can be leveled by intensive practical learning after the COVID-19 pandemic is over.
Can the COVID 19 Impact on Nursing Profession Result in Shortages?
What made the possible impact of such shortages in nursing homes?
- Moral distress because of the enormous load.
- Nurse burnout during COVID-19.
- Increased morbidity in nursing homes.
- Dissatisfying working conditions as the impact of work overload.
However, the impact of the public health system on the normal functioning of any country is crucial, not only during COVID-19. So necessary actions to prevent shortages are taken by the government. The US is allocating a huge budget to impact the state of the activity and to weaken the negative COVID 19 impact. To prevent shortages, the government has to develop strategies to impact the influx of nurses and create appropriate COVID-19 relevant working conditions.
What Perspectives Does the Nursing Profession Have?
As we have found, the impact of COVID-19 on education was intense, and the COVID-19 pandemic had both positive and negative effects. While the government fears massive shortages in nursing homes, colleges admit increasing interest in this sphere. Potentially because of COVID 19 impact on nursing practice, the profession became quite popular among future students.
Universities admitted they were expecting a decrease in interest as an impact on nursing education. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing reported an enhancement of interest in the profession based on an increase of applications by 6%. In 2021 an increase of 15% was registered. So nursing is a developing and prospective sphere.
